Bridgers’s unfiltered take in the form of sharp songwriting is a message that she was able to reclaim some of her independence and passion for music, even after she was in a relationship where both were jeopardized. Yet the existence of this song suggests that Bridgers was able to break free from Adams and his toxic behavior, taking back what belonged to her - her musicality - which she possessed all along. By pursuing relationships in which he could take advantage of his influence in the music industry to exploit women, Adams took away the musical independence of these budding female artists and left many of them with a disillusioned attitude toward making music. While the lyrics to “Motion Sickness” offer insight to the nature of Adams’s unacceptable behavior, the existence of this song reveals Bridgers’ strength. By detailing her own relationship with Adams, Bridgers corroborates other similar accounts of female musicians who were in the same position of being Adams’ pretty musical project instead of his partner - how he promised to bolster their careers while allegedly trapping them in a toxic, harassing relationship, essentially forcing these women to choose between their well-being or their musical career. Lyrics like “There are no words in the English language / I could scream to drown you out” reflect the lasting trauma that can remain after a hurtful and exploitative relationship and acknowledge that abuse is not a trivial matter, but rather an unabated constant that taints future experiences.īridgers’s experience as told through “Motion Sickness” seems to describe another iteration of Adams’s tendency to exploit female musicians. The titular lyric, “I have emotional motion sickness / somebody roll the windows down,” alludes to the emotional turmoil of an abusive relationship - a sick-to-the-stomach, visceral sense that something is amiss along with the knowledge that it would be difficult to break free. It’s part of the larger picture of how Adams exploited the power imbalance between himself and promising female musicians.īridgers directly confronts her relationship with Adams. Taking these revelations into account, “Motion Sickness,” is no longer just a song that describes one circumstantially incompatible relationship. In a recently published exposé by the New York Times, Adams was accused of emotional abuse and sexual harassment by several women, one of whom was Bridgers. It’s a poignant yet scathing reflection of a past relationship with Ryan Adams, a musician and the owner of the record label PAX-AM known for his successful solo albums and his cover of Taylor Swift’s “1989.” In “Motion Sickness,” Bridgers vividly addresses the pain and the aftertaste of an imbalanced relationship with Adams.īut “Motion Sickness” has deeper implications in light of the recent allegations against Adams. Phoebe Bridgers’ 2017 single “ Motion Sickness” has all the hallmarks of a typical indie song: absurd and specific lyrics, ethereal vocals, and experimental instrumentals.

Peter and Wendy (am I mixing this with Peter Pan? are they both sought after?) Wainwright set is not Folio Society but is valuable Icelandic Sagas (looks like the 1-volume compilation-not sure if that one is as expensive as separate?) The Fairy Tale Books (looks like there may be a full set at least, the highly sought after Orange volume is there) I'll gather my suggestions so far-based on what I gather is most sought after/most expensive second-hand: Then later they could concentrate on finding a better deal for the rest. Perhaps we could pitch in to make a list of books, based on muirwa's photos, that are definitely NOT to be sold in bulk? If they are in a hurry to clear space-housing that many books could be a problem that might make one forgo profit-perhaps they could dispose quickly of at least the bulk of common standard editions. Just the latest of many examples I could quote, True collectors will very happily pay you much more. A week later the dealer had it listed for £850. I have in mind a good friend who very recently sold a desirable set on eBay for £250 to a quite well-known dealer. I can only wish you the best of luck and beg you not to turn this hugely desirable lot over to a dealer. Facing that mountain of books I'd be as daunted as you are. If I were you I'd be looking for someone to sell on your behalf on a commission basis if you don't want the job and you have no friends or family willing to help out. They'll be drooling all over themselves seeing pics such as those and making very "competitive" offers around 5% (if you're very lucky) of what your aunt paid for them, whereas with the books being so very recent you can probably expect to get ten times that, and much more on the hard to find volumes that people are desperate for. The alternative is to make some greedy dealer rich and very happy. >14 LolaWalser: you really would best be advised to go over them individuallyĪfter a very cursory glance I can only agree 100% with Lola\s opinion. >13 muirwa: (Only the books purchased in the last year or two). Picture Quality: This is perhaps the most important thing to consider when buying a short-throw projector. Here are a few different things we considered when picking out the best short-throw projectors. Short-throw projectors are just that: a projector shoots its picture up and out in front of the device, so it’s far easier to operate. Standard projectors and portable projectors come in various sizes, and have to be placed a distance away from a projection screen, usually several feet away. Home projectors are having a bit of a moment right now, especially considering how many of the big media companies are making it easier to watch big movies from the comfort of your couch mere weeks after they are released in theaters. Best Budget: JMGO 01 Ultra Short-Throw Projector How We Picked the Best Short-Throw Projectors Best 4K: Hisense PX1 4K UHD Triple-Laser UST Ultra Short-Throw Projector Best for Gaming: BenQ TK700STi 4K HDR Short-Throw Gaming Projector Best Ultra HD: LG CineBeam HU915QE Ultra Short-Throw 4K UHD Best Overall: Optoma CinemaX P2 Smart 4K UHD Laser Projector But which device is right for you? Here’s a selection of the best short-throw projectors available right now. Simply put them in front of a wall or projection screen and power them on to enjoy theater-quality images at home. Short-throw projectors don’t require any second guessing or finicky setups. And what if it falls? Say goodbye to that thousand-dollar investment. Regular projectors aren’t exactly user-friendly, and mounting them on walls or ceilings can be annoying at best, and dangerous at worst. Short-throw projectors are perfect for anyone looking to simplify their quest to make a home theater. It’s possible to change the defaults on your word processor to something other than black text on a white background. To check that you have the correct font, in GDocs do this: To check that you have the correct font, in Word do this: Leave that decision to the interior layout stage, not editing stage. There are some fonts that read better in book format. Note: your actual book may end up with a different font. Don’t use anything else for your manuscript. Use A Standard Font (Times New Roman or Arial) The thing is: every one of these are routinely violated by authors who don’t pay attention, and that is why we mention them. If you don’t touch the defaults on your word processing program, then most of these will be non-issues. Most of them will seem obvious to you, and most are baked into the defaults of Microsoft Word or Google Docs. These rules also reflect the ones most common conventions in the publishing industry. What I’m about to show you are the 15 formatting rules that our book editors ask from our authors at Scribe. There are no rules, only conventions that developed over the past century of book publishing. You can’t go to the Formatting Police and get official law on Standard Manuscript Format (I wish, that would make things much easier). The 15 Scribe Manuscript Format Rulesīefore we start, understand there are no actual “rules” for formatting. This means manuscript format is the proper way your manuscript should look when you send it in for editing. Charge you more a lot more money to do formatting work you should have done. Not fix your formatting, and do a poor job editing as a result, or.Think you’re unprofessional and edit your book under that assumption. If you send in a manuscript that’s not formatted properly, your editor will do three things: It comes down to readability for the editor. If you don’t, your book will suffer, and you’re going to spend more money than you need to on editing. I’ll be honest: manuscript formatting is tedious and boring. Disability-free life expectancy is an estimate of the number of years lived without a self-reported long-lasting physical or mental health condition that limits daily activities. cHealthy life expectancy is an estimate of the number of years lived in ‘very good’ or ’good’ general health, based on how individuals perceive their general health.Similarly, disability-free life expectancy is almost two decades shorter than life expectancy, and is higher among males (62.4 years) than females (60.9 years). And although females live an average of 3.7 years longer than males, most of that time (3 years) is spent in poor health. In 2018–20 a female in England could expect to live 83.1 years, of which 19.3 years (23 per cent) would have been spent in ‘not good’ health. Although a male in England could expect to live 79.4 years in 2018–20, his average healthy life expectancy was only 63.1 years – ie, he would have spent 16.3 of those years (20 per cent) in ‘not good’ health. Has also increased over time, but not as much as life expectancy, so more years are spent in poor health. Life expectancy can also be calculated for specific ages, eg, age 65, which is the average lifespan for a 65-year-old person if current death rates at ages 65 and over do not change. However, if rates are falling, actual life spans will be higher than life expectancy calculated using current death rates. bLife expectancy at birth is defined as how long, on average, a newborn can expect to live if current death rates do not change. The article refers throughout to life expectancy at birth. From 2011 increases in life expectancy slowed after decades of steady improvement, prompting much debate about the causes. While it does appear on the island, it is both very rare and incredibly difficult to find. Unfortunately, this island is a terrible place to find Lithium. Suspended at the surface of the ocean by a group of massive Floaters, this this bizarre place is the largest naturally-occuring landmass in the entire game. The real question is, are you crazy enough to descend to your certain death to get a material that could be gotten elsewhere with half the risk? It's up to you to decide.Įntrances to the Jelly Shroom Caves can be found all over the map, but especially in the Grassy Plateaus biome. Stacks and stacks of Gold and Lithium lie around every corner, and a single trip to this horrifying abyss should be enough to provide you with enough Lithium to construct a Cyclops, at the very least. If you do make it back, however, you will surely not be doing so empty-handed, for the Caves offer some of the best loot Subnautica has to offer. A pitch-black, winding labyrinth that seems to never end, this is a place where many go, but very few return from. If you thought the Mushroom Forest Biome was scary (at least at night), then the Jelly Shroom Caves are its tough, grizzled great-grandfather. Inhabited by packs of haunting, ghost-like Jelly Rays and crammed full of the towering, titular mushroom trees, the Mushroom Forest Biome is not a place you want to hang around for too long. Thanks to that instant torque, electric cars are very quick off the mark – like the Tesla Model 3 pictured above. Internal combustion engines only produce maximum torque at certain engine revs. But what marks electric cars out is that all the torque is available instantly. How much torque an electric car produces depends on how powerful the motor is and the numbers for some don’t look that impressive. What about electric cars? Do they have lots of torque? They will be much more fuel-efficient than a petrol car. That’s why diesel cars are a good choice if you take long, high-speed motorway journeys. Low torque engines are less economical because they have to work harder than high torque engines. Beyond 500 Nm (369 lb/ft), most engines come with an automatic gearbox anyway since they’re better able to cope with an engine that strong. It’s worth noting that engines producing much more than 400 Nm (295 lb/ft) of torque, whether petrol or diesel, are usually at their best teamed with an automatic gearbox. If you need a car to tow a trailer or caravan, you’ll need the extra strength of a high torque engine to help pull the extra weight. Diesel fuel is also ignited by compression, rather than the spark plugs that petrol relies on this, combined with diesel’s higher energy content, also contributes to its punchy torque performance. A turbocharger helps produce more pressure inside the cylinder, which again increases torque. See the pulling power of torque in our tug of war video.Īlso diesel engines tend to be turbocharged. To put it simply, the more torque you have, the more effortless the acceleration will feel. A car with high torque – a long spanner – will. A car with low torque – a short spanner – won’t accelerate quickly at that point. You’re driving along at 40mph in top gear and put your foot down. Using a longer spanner takes less effort to tighten the nut to the same extent. Using a short spanner takes a lot of effort to tighten the nut. Imagine you’re tightening a nut with a spanner. Torque tells you how strong an engine is. But most people don’t drive like that, which is where torque comes in. An engine with lots of power will rip round to the rev limit, making lots of noise and feeling very exciting. Power tells you how fast a car will go with a certain engine. In this advice guide, you’ll find out everything you need to know about torque. Torque matters at least as much and possibly more, depending on how you use your car. Power is self-explanatory but torque? Not so much.īig power numbers might look impressive, but they’re only part of the story when figuring out what a car will be like to drive. When you look at the specification of a car’s engine, you’ll see numbers for power and torque. I’ll provide the first 10 or so lines from each and you see what would be easier to make a movie out of.īURNING: Massive flames. You can find the script here and an example subtitle can be found here. What you fail to see is how different subtitles are from a script, much less how small a part they are of the entire work (which is the movie, not just the script). He never said that the subtitles are words that don’t have anything to do with the movie. And, when it’s an operation like Netflix - which is obviously a commercial entity - you have to wonder if it’s going to get sued…įiled Under: copyright, crowdsourcing, subtitles While some of us think that providing captions/subtitles should be pretty clear fair use, others (obviously) disagree. Either way, it seems like it opens up some pretty serious copyright questions. Knowing both those things, isn’t it interesting that Netflix is now experimenting with crowdsourcing captioning/subtitles for films and TV shows? Perhaps it figures that having lost that first legal fight, it should lean in the other direction and see if it gets sued there as well. A few days before that, we had written about a student who ran a site that provided crowdsourced downloadable subtitle files for TV and movies, and had been found guilty of copyright infringement. As we noted at the time, this raised interesting copyright questions, considering that Netflix may not be legally allowed to put captions on videos. First, there’s the story of Netflix being told that not having closed captioning on its streaming movies means it violates the Americans with Disabilities Act.
